Key Takeaways

  • In an Asian handicap bet you give one team an advantage (+) or a disadvantage (-) on the scoreline.
  • Points given (+) or taken (-) from a team can be decimals in increments of 0.25. i.e -0.5, +0.75, or +1.
  • Quarter handicaps - ending in .25 or .75 - split your wager between the closest whole number and the closest half point (.5).
  • Quarter lines can result in half wins or half losses, see table for examples.
  • Asian handicaps are a great way to minimize risk and are good alternatives to moneylines when they are not offering enough value on the odds.

What is it?

An Asian handicap bet is a bet where an advantage ( + scoreline points ) or disadvantage ( - scoreline points) is given to a side in a match. These points given or taken are in relation to the scoreline, meaning that in soccer (football) if you take the +1.75 handicap on a team, you are pretty much giving them +1.75 goals for free. Then at the end of the game when all the dust is settled and we have the final score for the game, we add or subtract the handicap we got for the team we got it for, and if the team is still winning then you win, and if they are losing then you lose. Simple? Yes. There is one tricky part though, with this type fo bet you you can actually end up only winning half of your money, losing half, or just getting it all right back.

This only happens if you take a decimal handicap, specifically any decimal that ends in .25 or .75. Placing on these numbers pretty much means you place two bets. We have two examples that apply to any handicaps that end in these decimals and will explain it well.

X.25 Example

Handicap of (+/-)1.25 on Team A. Half my money is going to (+/-)1 bet and the other half is going to a bet on (+/-)1.5.

X.75 Example

Handicap of (+/-)1.75 on Team A. Half my money is going to (+/-)1.5 bet and the other half is going to a bet on (+/-)2.

How do you know if you won?

After you add or sub your points from your sides score, if your side is +0.25 above the opponent then its a half win. If the side is -0.25 under the opponent then its a half loss. The other half in these cases just gets given back to you as it was. All other cases where you win by more than 0.25 is an all out win, and if you lose by more than 0.25 than its a complete loss. We made it easy for you and have a simulator that will help determine what the outcomes is depending on your handicap and the outcome of the game. You can also check out our table that gives you a few examples as well.

Tips & Strategies

The best thing about Asian handicap betting is that it gives you options beyond what the standard moneyline is offering you and sometimes better odds.

When to take a handicap bet?

There are a couple situations that this type of bet is best used for :
  • When a team is more of an underdog than they should be and are given good odds on positive (+) handicaps
  • When the favorite team is almost without a doubt going to win a game but the bookies know this too and have made them a huge favorite on the moneyline. It would be a waste to take such unfavorable odds (i.e -500) but you may be able to find an edge betting on the favorite to win by a goal margin ( taking a negative handicap ).
  • .25 or .75 handicaps can be used to split your money between two bets letting you minimize risk. Let's say that I think that a side is going to win by at least two points/goals, but I don't want to risk my entire wager. What I could do is take a +1.25, so that in the case that the team only wins by one goal, I can still get half my money back.

What odds to take?

This is a straight-forward answer, one that you will find reiterated on this site constantly. The closer the odds are to plus money the better. Usually with odds that are low you stand to lose more than you can win. Personally, if a single or parlay is anything lower than -150 (1.67 EU or 4/6 UK) than I don't take it. Finding plus money odds is not always easy, especially because bookies these days are smart and have a lot of data, so their lines are usually pretty accurate. Therefore do not think because you have odds that are not giving you double or more that the bet is no good.
